The purpose of this paper is to show that both design flexibility and operator enhancement are key elements in the evolution of a successfully operating zero discharge facility. The intent is to show the importance of each step from the definition phase through the start- up and operation. The guidelines that govern the operation of the cogeneration facility are strict, but can be attained by understanding the importance of developing an operable and maintainable treatment system. Technologies used in the water treatment and recycle systems include iron oxidation, acid neutralization, coagulation, precipitation, clarification, filtration, cooling tower sidestream softening, sludge conditioning, sludge dewatering, reverse osmosis, and demineralization.
