The Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID) is an area of about 43 square miles in southwestern Orange and northwestern Osceola Counties in Florida. Reedy Creek Energy Services (RCES), a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company, is responsible for providing and maintaining all utilities within the RCID. This includes wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal. Wastewater is treated by a central wastewater plant (WWTP) rated at 10 million gallons per day (MGD) capacity. The WWTP is currently undergoing modifications to implement biological nutrient removal and install filters with denitrification capability, along with increasing the plant capacity up to 15 mgd. The current effluent disposal system permit allows discharge to a 100-acre tree farm with a fixed irrigation system, a percolation pond system, rapid infiltration basins, and indirect discharge to Reedy Creek via a controlled wetlands or swamp cleansing system. In addition, a reuse system is being installed to supply irrigation, washdown, and cooling water throughout the property.
