In 1987, Health and Welfare Canada and Public Works Canada identified three high priority water quality concerns regarding North Coast water supplies. They were: biological contaminants such as giardia; disinfection byproducts; and lead corrosion. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of limestone contactors for treating North Coast British Columbia waters. Specific objectives included investigating: increase in calcium, alkalinity and pH with time; effect of flow rate on contactor performance; difference in performance on contactors open or closed to the atmosphere (carbon dioxide); effect of limestone on treated water quality; change in performance over many months; suitability of limestone contactors for conditioning of water for flocculation with aluminum sulphate (alum).
