The research described in this paper was designed to obtain detailed information on ripening and breakthrough in carefully controlled experiments using natural heterodisperse suspensions. Special emphasis was placed on understanding the effect of particle size on these phenomena. Specifically, experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of particle concentration and the role of particle reentrainment (i.e., breakoff) in ripening and breakthrough under various operating conditions.
