This report investigates the influence of molecular weight and structure on the transport of charged macromolecules in a semi-batch ultrafiltration system, and systematically validate the applicability of a permeation model for the characterization of random-coil polymer transport. In this research, a spiral-wound crossflow membrane configuration was chosen because concentration polarization effects are minimized due to a high crossflow velocity, it is a configuration that shows good potential for practical water treatment applications, and because this configuration is available in laboratory scale units for analytical uses. The model was used to assess macromolecule coiling characteristics, quantify membrane cutoff values applicable to charged macromolecules, and evaluate the effects of system operating variables and solution ionic strength. While the results are obtained in a laboratory-scale, non-steady-state process, it is expected that the fundamental results obtained in this system will be applicable to larger-scale installations which operate at steady-state.
