This paper reviews the theories of particle transport in crossflow membrane filters operating in laminar flow. Information on different transport mechanisms is obtained from experimental determinations of particle residence time distributions (RTDs). Quantitative agreement between theory and experiment is reported for first transit times. Analysis of peaks in particle RTDs is shown to provide evidence for initial transport dominated by permeation drag and particle inertia as well as back-transport induced by fluid shear and particle-particle interactions.
