Pre-ozonation of water supplies can affect subsequent treatment steps in important ways, including altering coagulant demand, total organic carbon removal by sedimentation and filtration, rate of filter headloss build-up, and filter effluent water quality. Though recent work with a variety of coagulants has illustrated each of these phenomena, a comprehensive understanding of the factors controlling them is lacking. This study represents an attempt to understand effects of ozonation on coagulation and filtration, with a particular emphasis on systems where polymeric coagulants are used.
