The objective of this paper is to compare different measurements of the biodegradability of natural organic matter (NOM); namely, biodegradable organic carbon (BDOC) and assimilable organic carbon (AOC); and to define potential correlations between BDOC or AOC and various chemical surrogates. Potential chemical surrogates include formaldehyde, sum of measured aldehydes (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, glyoxal, and methyl glyoxal), and various NOM "fractions." Some attention was given to chlorophyll a as a parameter of autochthonous NOM.
