The conclusions of the study described in this paper are as follows: A risk assessment approach is useful for normalizing different disinfection byproduct profiles associated with alternative treatments and enables the carcinogenic risk rather than one compound to be the driving force for selection of a treatment strategy; A risk assessment approach can highlight the significance of a given compound for a particular water or treatment strategy. It can focus on a given compound that appears to be the limiting factor for water treatment; An individual MCL approach does not necessarily recognize the dynamics of DBP chemistry and thereby may not be the best approach; Limitations with respect to health effects data are the key item limiting the tool, especially in bromide-containing waters.
