It has been a full year since the USEPA promulgated the lead and copper rule under the Safe Drinking Water Act amendment of 1986. By now many water system operators will have completed the tap water monitoring requirements and will be giving serious consideration to a corrosion treatment program. This paper will present new and updated corrosion control data collected on some New England communities who have chosen alkalinity supplementation with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) in their corrosion control programs. Individual system experience ranges from 15 years to six months. Lead and copper data, obtained under strict adherence to EPA protocol, will be presented.
