In August 1991, predesign for Phase 1 of the Water Quality Improvement Plant (WQIP) adopted by the Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) including upgraded disinfection and corrosion control facilities and upgrading of facilities to transfer high quality Coquitlam water in a westerly direction, and planning studies for Phases 2 and 3, filtration and Seymour and Capilano, respectively, were initiated. The planning studies include pilot filtration plant studies at Capilano and Seymour in order to develop conceptual process design criteria for the proposed 900 ML/day filtration plants. It is important to note that the pilot plant studies are not being used to develop detail design criteria but as a tool to facilitate the planning required, at this time, for phases 2 and 3 of the WQIP. This paper describes the pilot plant studies under way, the pilot plant equipment and procedures, and some preliminary results.
