The City of South Gate, California has a cluster of four wells, totalling approximately 5000 gpm, which were shut down due to low levels of perchloroethylene (PCE), ranging from the maximum contaminant level of 5 ppb to a maximum of approximately 10 ppb. The City's goal was to treat the water from these wells for drinking water. The city also wanted to build a 4-million gallon covered reservoir in the area, thus providing a unique opportunity for a creative treatment solution. Air stripping was chosen in prior studies conducted by the City. Because PCE removals in excess of 80 percent were achieved using spray nozzles, the pilot test was considered successful.
