A feasibility study conducted in 1988 recommended treatment by membrane softening rather than lime softening for the City of Boynton Beach, Florida. Membrane softening would allow water hardness reduction to desired levels and would remove color and trihalomethane precursors present in the raw water to meet anticipated future drinking water regulations. The design of the facility, referred to as the West Water Treatment Plant, was started in the spring of 1989 after pilot testing. Construction is scheduled to be completed in May 1993. Plant sizing, process criteria, and plant features are briefly presented.
