Water mains in the Chester Water Authority, Chester, Pennsylvania that were installed over 60 years ago have been found to be heavily tuberculated and have experienced corrosion and graphitization, thereby reducing the structural integrity of the water main resulting in leakage in the older sections of the distribution system. In 1974, the Authority has since renovated approximately 23 miles through the annual cleaning and lining program. The cleaning and lining program also includes replacement of all valves and lead and galvanized services when they are found on the project. The Authority also replaces all meters within the scope of the cleaning and lining job, thereby eliminating the under-registration associated with older meters. This program has resulted in the reduction of leakage from valves, water mains, and services. Combined with the Authority's leak detection program, consistent reduction of unaccounted-for water is described.
