The Boston Water and Sewer Commission (BWSC) embarked on a pilot project to downsize large meters as part of its efforts to reduce unaccounted-for water. A Commission task force had identified the fact that a potentially great amount of water was not accounted-for at low rates of flow due to oversized meters. A team was assembled to implement a comprehensive project to investigate water usage and downsize large meters. Rate-of-flow measurement devices were used to more accurately determine proper meter size, and changes in unaccounted-for water were tracked. Over a year's worth of consumption data from downsized accounts has allowed the project team to analyze results in the context of seasonal differences in water usage is presented.
