By the early 1980's, the Louanis Water Treatment Plant (Reading, Massachusetts), was experiencing severe difficulties in effectively treating water. The plant was hydraulically overloaded with high flow rates to satisfy customer demands and its filters were clogging regularly and requiring high backwash water quantities. Additionally, the raw water had gradually changed over the years with increasing iron levels, and, more recently, volatile organic chemical levels. An engineering firm was hired to evaluate the entire treatment plant and resolve its difficulties. A coordinated understanding of the treatment plant wa needed to identify its limitations and provide an efficient upgrade. The successful rehabilitation of the plant is detailed.
