The Australian water industry is faced with an array of water quality issues of public health significance such as cyanobacterial toxins, high organic carbon and nutrient levels, disinfection byproducts, bacterial regrowth, as well as aesthetic problems such as unpleasant taste and odor. Much of the demand for improved levels of service has arisen from a more aware and informed public who expect a continuous supply of safe and aesthetically pleasing drinking water. In addition, a major concern to the Australian water authorities relates to the high cost of water treatment. The authorities have accepted these challenges and considerable effort is being directed to solutions based on integrated catchment management, reduction and/or control of natural organic carbon and nutrient levels, control of cyanobacterial blooms, and the development of improved water treatment processes.
