With the expansion of the Haworth Filter Plant, Hackensack Water Company installed two 4 MW turbine generators with provisions for a third generator. The ability to control and monitor the plant power facilities from the plant control system was provided. The plant power facilities include both the plant breakers and the turbine generators. The turbine generators allow the Water Company to supply over three quarters of a million people with water and fire protection reliably in the event of disruption of electric utility power. The generators can also provide economic benefits through reduced electrical utility rates due to peak shaving and load curtailment contacts. Monitoring and controlling the plant power facilities from the control system allows the facilities to be monitored remotely, allows for interlock and turbine control logic in addition to the hardwired safety logic, provides a friendly and flexible interface for operation, and provides for training through simulation.
