Water districts throughout the world are faced with the continuing problem how to best determine the condition of their water mains. In response to this problem, the AWWA Research Foundation funded a research project to evaluate several methods of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) that could be adapted to water mains. The intent of this project was to assess the suitability of numerous NDE methods, to select the most likely candidates, and ultimately, to evaluate them under field conditions. Such methods would be valuable if they could prevent pipe failures, which are a common occurrence with the aging distribution systems around the world. By using suitable NDE methods, water districts could better maintain the integrity of water pipeline systems and optimize the useful service lives of such systems. This paper explains how nondestructive testing (NDT) can be used to determine the physical integrity of exposed and buried water mains not damaging the pipe in the process. The full copy of the report prepared by the AWWA Research Foundation is publication order number 90601.
