In 1991 the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) launched their Municipal Water/Wastewater Project. Its objective is to bring together personnel from water, wastewater, and electric utilities to address common issues and to gain a perspective of each others needs. The EPRI Water/Wastewater Project has four areas of focus: demand side management; electrotechnologies; desalination; and small systems. This paper discusses some activities of the Small Systems Committee. The objectives of the Small Systems Project are to: determine how electric utilities might interact with and use their resources to benefit small water and wastewater utilities; and determine what emerging technologies exist that may be especially beneficial to water and wastewater utilities. Three case studies that represent some significant instances in which rural electric cooperatives (RECs) have aided water and wastewater utilities are given.
