Pretreatment of reverse osmosis for control of biological foulants can be risky when using oxidants such as chlorine. Chlorine can shorten the life of cellulose acetate membranes and destroy thin film composite membranes. Ultraviolet disinfection technology has been proven an effective disinfectant for the pretreatment of reverse osmosis, as shown in the two case histories presented in this paper. Background information on the development of UV disinfection and how it works are given.
