Pennsylvania has experienced seven (7) major giardiasis outbreaks from contaminated surface water sources since 1979. Since 1991, pathogenic protozoa have caused waterborne illnesses in two public water systems using wells as sources. Both systems have well sources located in karst limestone settings and are less than 100 feet from streams. Pathogenic protozoa contamination of the wells has been confirmed in both cases by microscopic particulate analysis. This study concerns the two (2) wells serving the Lemont Water Company, a community water system serving 1,200 customers in Centre County Pennsylvania.
