In response to the surface water treatment rule and the disinfection byproduct rule, the Massachusetts Water ResourcesAuthority (MWRA) initiated a pilot treatment program of its Wachusett Reservoir supply. The authority retained CH2M Hill Consulting Engineers and the University of Massachusetts for the purpose of conducting a 4-season pilot study on this water source. This paper attempts to describe the more important results regarding the removal of disinfection byproducts (DBPs), byproduct precursors, and assimilable organic carbon (AOC). The data are summarized in a concise fashion so that they might be useful to other utilities and researchers examining the use of ozone with granular media filtration.
