The objective of this research was to evaluate the impact of ozonation on the formation of halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) produced by subsequent chlorination and chloramination with and without coagulation. Ozonation is gaining attention in the public water supply industry as an alternative primary disinfection and oxidation method because ozone is a stronger oxidant and disinfectant than chlorine, and it does not produce chlorinated disinfection byproducts. Many utilities use or are considering using ozone for pretreatment followed by free chlorine as a final disinfectant. The use of a combined ozone-chloramine strategy appears to be particularly attractive for minimizing halogenated DBP formation while meeting oxidation and disinfection requirements.
