Depth filtration is, from one perspective, an extremely simple unit process. A suspension is passed through a submerged packed bed of granular media, and under favorable chemical conditions, particles are removed from the suspension through attachment to the media and previously retained particles. If the media is fine enough, approach velocity low enough, and media depth great enough, desired effluent quality is achieved (at least initially). However, to bridge the gap from functional to optimal design, a deeper level of understanding is required. The research described herein entails mathematical modeling of the relationships between design and operating parameters and initial removal in a depth filter.
