Nitrification has been reported in water systems that chloraminate as the popularity of chloramine secondary disinfection grows. Nitrification is often associated with losses in chloramine residual, increased bacterial growth, losses in dissolved oxygen levels and other symptoms. A reported nitrification incidence most often occurs in areas of the distribution system that may have a long detention time and is usually associated with warmer water temperatures. As part of an AWWA Research Foundation project on the Occurrence of Nitrification in Chloraminating Water System, a telephone survey was performed to gather nation-wide information on the occurrence of nitrification, monitoring for nitrification, nitrification control practices, and water treatment data. This information will be used to help correlate nitrification occurrence in the US. Other parts of the study include Nitrification Control Case Studies and a Laboratory Method for Controlling Nitrification with treatment.
