As water suppliers must go to ever more remote regions for water supply, the economics of pumping and friction loss in pipe flow, as well as the life of pipes, becomes ever more important. What has been standard practice in the oil and gas industry is a new technology for the water industry: the fusion bonded epoxy lining and coating of steel and ductile iron pipe. A fusion bonded epoxy coating uses heat to melt and adhere the epoxy coating to the metal substrate. When compared to polyethylene and other soft linings, the abrasion resistance of fusion bonded epoxy is far superior. While reducing friction, the mirror-like finish also reduces the buildup of foreign material on the interior of the pipe. To apply the epoxy lining, the surface is first cleaned, degassed, and then heated. The epoxy powder is sprayed on, and the pipe is cured. A similar process is followed for both the interior and exterior of the pipe. Epoxy coatings can also be applied to welded steel joints in the field. The extra initial cost of fusion bonded epoxy can be justified in areas in which corrosion or friction loss over a long pipeline are problems.
