EPA has funded a three year project in which researchers at the University of South Carolina are performing comprehensive treatment and distribution system monitoring studies for three communities in South Carolina. The primary objective is to provide insight to state regulators and water suppliers on appropriate corrosion control strategies for these and other systems with similar corrosive water sources. This paper will discuss: the procedures used to organize and implement the customer sampling program; the operation/maintenance advantages and disadvantages of the different treatment systems; the process control performance; the water characteristics found in the distribution systems and customer plumbing; and the development of a pilot system to evaluate the effectiveness of various chemical treatment alternatives in mitigating lead and copper corrosion by the characteristic soft acidic waters.
