Pilot tests can be divided into two categories depending on the degree of process development. Development tests help create process designs. Demonstration tests validate existing designs. In membrane tests, the critical parameters are: feedwater source (well, surface, waste), feedwater chemical makeup, pretreatment process and conditions, recovery, membrane geometry, and flow velocities. Two case histories illustrate requirements of pilot plants and the potential for disaster in relying on invalid test results. The first is an ultrafiltration system that is part of a wastewater treatment plant, and the second is a waste water recovery system for a metals finishing plant.
