The idea of trading off human operators for computerized instrumentation and control equipment is too simplistic. This study looked into automation management strategies for water treatment facilities. By definition, automation entails replacing or eliminating intermediate components or steps in a process, particularly those involving people. This study began with a survey of water quality regulators regarding automation in the states. Detailed survey results are given. The author goes on to discuss benefits and costs of automation, the automation decision model, maintenance, and human factors.
