This paper will provide a synopsis of the technical and construction challenges encountered during the design and rehabilitation of a 50 year old, 48 inch steel water main located on Tremont Street in Boston, Massachusetts. The water main had experienced periodic leaks and the Boston Water and Sewer Commission (Commission) decided to rehabilitate the main prior to the need for total replacement. Details are provided throughout the paper as to the history of the main, the anticipated and actual condition of the main, influence of groundwater and soils, impact of the urban environment, construction related problems and knowledge gained from the rehabilitation of this steel water main.
