Xeriscape programs across the US have been active since 1980 to improve the efficiency of landscape water use and reduce summer peak water demand. Water utilities have initiated numerous xeriscape programs such as demonstration gardens, literature production, plant tagging, design contests, conferences, workshops, rebate programs, ordinances and research. However, there is no accepted methodology in implementing an effective regional xeriscape program. Water utilities must develop new and innovative approaches to promote xeriscape programs that are regionally designed to meet their goals and expectations. This paper discusses the evolution and development of the Phoenix Xeriscape Program and new directions for xeriscape programs in the Phoenix area.
