This work began as an effort to fundamentally characterize the composition, surface chemistry and microtopography of filter media coated with manganese oxide mineral deposits. Techniques from the geological sciences were used to determine mineralogical and catalytic properties of mineral coating surfaces for use in a kinetic model of Mn removal. In the presence of free chlorine, mineralized filter media catalyze soluble Mn2+ removal by an abiotic sorption and oxidation process known as the "natural greensand effect." The descriptive studies were an attempt to apply mineral surface complexation theory to dynamic process modeling of inorganic solute profiles and breakthrough behavior. In addition to descriptive studies, methods were developed to rapidly coat media with synthetic Mn oxide.
