The Philadelphia Suburban Water Company (PSWC) research department has evolved a strategy for positively identifying causative agents in taste and odor (T&O) events. The article outlines the steps used successfully to positively identify T&O causing compounds. There are three basic scenarios which the T&O investigations have followed which are outlined in the paper. It is concluded that gathering as much information about taste and odor problems as possible is often the key to success in positively identifying the causes of taste and odor episodes. Contact with neighboring utilities and experts in the field of drinking water taste and odor research is also extremely important.
