This discussion points out the need for complete and accurate information on critical characteristics of the water system, including future water demands and water source location and capacity. The size of the storage must take into account the fire demand, operational demand, and emergency demand needed for the water system in question. The thorough and accurate hydraulic analysis of the distribution system aids in properly locating the storage tank, and in identifying needed upgrades of the distribution system. Lets remember the reasons for all this attention to the hydraulic reliability of the water system--protection of the quality of the drinking water pumped to the distribution system. That protection is provided by assuring (to the extent possible) the maintenance of positive pressure throughout the distribution system under all circumstances. Properly sized and located storage facilities are an integral part of assuring that positive pressure.
