Over the past few years there has been significant progress in the development of flow monitoring instrumentation to determine flow rates used by various classes of water customers. Through the data supplied by flow monitoring equipment, the meter selection process will be simplified and error free. The result will be the savings of millions of dollars by utilities. The author suggests that you be sure that the meter you are using has been recently tested, is accurate and is capable of measuring the full range of flow rates the customer will use. Also, record the flow data for periods long enough to get the full range of the customer's water use patterns. Meter selection must be the ultimate responsibility of the utility, not contractors, architects or developers, and with the flow monitoring equipment available to assist the utility, making the right meter selection can eliminate expensive premature meter changeouts and revenue losses.
