The basic objective of the project was to design a treatment system that would reduce the nitrate in the well water to an acceptable level that would be as inexpensive as practical, easy to operate, and reliable. Ease of operation was extremely important. Hiring an experienced operator was not a financially viable option. Reliability was the third major criterion. In light of the lack of experienced treatment plant operators, the treatment process had to be extremely reliable with respect to consistent results with minimal operator intervention. The plant was designed using Boyle's Advanced Ion Exchange Process for nitrate removal. This process is an enhanced method of operating ion exchange plants to reduce salt consumption in situations where complete removal of nitrate is not required.
