Serving drinking water to a population of over eight million people in the City of New York presents a huge responsibility for monitoring and control of water quality throughout the system. In this paper, descriptions of the New York City water supply system and the continuous water quality monitoring and control program are presented. The descriptions presented are: the three watershed systems (Croton, Catskill and Delaware); water quality monitoring and instrumentation at strategic locations in the upstate water supply districts; gathering and utilization of the water quality data; telemetry and data transmission into a central database; and future planning and expansion of water quality monitoring and control to enhance on-line operations and management planning.
