Once facilities with raw water intakes realized how vulnerable their systems were to zebra mussel infestation and how many potential problems could be caused by this, identifying ways to combat the colonization patterns of the mollusk became a primary objective. While not completely infallible, chemical dosing systems for zebra mussel control have proven effective at low dosages. The application of sodium hypochlorite, chlorine, and potassium permanganate at a point near the mouth of the intake where raw water enters the system appears to be effective in deterring zebra mussels from settling within the raw water system. This paper presents case studies from Niagara County Water District, Erie City WaterAuthority, Town of Tonawanda, Erie County Water Authority and Regional Municipality of Hamilton-Wentworth.
