In anticipation of applying for an exception from filtration, the District contracted with Camp Dresser & McKee Inc. (CDM) in January, 1988, to conduct a study to determine the feasibility of using ozonation as the primary disinfectant to meet the SWTR requirements for its Sebago Lake water supply. After successfully conducting pilot scale tests between March 1988 and January 1989, CDM designed a 52-mgd "stand-alone" ozone disinfection facility, the first of its kind in the US. This paper describes the system configuration, including: the design of the ozone contact tanks and diffusers; the control system; and the feed gas systems.
