The Atkins Reservoir, located in Amherst, Massachusetts, is a typical New England surface supply with regards to turbidity, color, corrosivity, etc., but seasonably produces poor taste and odor quality. This paper focuses on the use of package plant technologies which have been configured and integrated into the Town's new 1.5 MGD filtration plant which effectively satisfies current drinking water quality standards as well as produces an excellent flavor and odor quality water. Three manufacturers' package systems have been incorporated to provide for ozonation, clarification/filtration, and granular activated carbon adsorption (GAC), all integrated with associated chemical metering systems via a PLC/PC central SCADA link. This paper details the aspects of design, construction and start-up associated with combining multiple package systems. In addition, some background design criteria and water quality data are presented. An innovative process application available using these package systems is the ability to apply ozonation and GAC in series to promote a biologically activated carbon adsorber.
