Software to Estimate Physical Properties (StEPP) is being designed to predict physical and chemical properties from a database of over 1000 organic contaminants and from various parameter estimation techniques. The properties provided by StEPP are relevant to modeling pollution treatment technologies, such as adsorption, air stripping, and biological wastewater treatment. StEPP is intended for widespread use by practicing engineers and as an educational tool. It is designed both as a stand-alone software package and as a tool that is integrable with other treatment models. The StEPP software is designed for the Microsoft Windows interface with a strong emphasis on user-friendliness, consisting of a Visual Basic front-end and FORTRAN computational routines. StEPP provides the following chemical properties: vapor pressure, infinite dilution activity coefficient, Henry's constant, molecular weight, normal boiling point, liquid density, molar volume, refractive index, aqueous solubility, octanol water partition coefficient, liquid diffusivity, and gas diffusivity. Physical properties of air and water available include: water density, water viscosity, water surface tension, air density, and air viscosity. Several properties are available over a wide range of temperatures. Sample applications of StEPP to provide the chemical properties needed to simulate packed tower aeration and fixed-bed adsorption are provided.
