This paper describes research on the removal of Cryptosporidium from drinking water supplies. The research reveals that Cryptosporidium oocyst removal rates of filtration-based treatment processes, depends on similarity in size distribution between the surrogates and Cryptosporidium oocysts. At various operational parameters including pressure drop across filter membrane, flow rate, and surrogate loading, removal rates of 4-6 um polystyrene microspheres most closely resemble that of Cryptosporidium oocysts. These polystyrene microspheres likely offer a reliable surrogate for removal rate determination of Cryptosporidium oocysts in the filtration-based treatment process. On the other hand, the researchers found that turbidity, 1-25 um and 4-6 um particle count, are the less reliable Cryptosporidium surrogates in this study. Their removal rates are subjected to natural variations of particle composition in raw water as a function of season and geographic locations.
