This paper presents follow-up research to a 1987 Legionella research project. The original study included a survey of one and two family homes in Austria, Germany, Upper Italy, West Berlin, and the Netherlands. The main purpose was to determine if the risk of Legionellosis was great in private homes and if the physical design of the homes (water temperature, plumbing material, presence of water circulation lines, or a circulation pump) correlated with the presence of Legionella in the homes. The original research did not reveal any such correlation. The follow-up research describes the pilot plant designed to determine the ability of common home distribution system materials to support the growth of Legionella. Samples of amoebae at the outlet of the fittings, the shower head, and the shower hose were taken to demonstrate the presence of amoebae. Temperature variations of 16-22 C, 34-38 C, and 43-48 C were used. The findings showed that Legionellae grown inside amoeba were able to infect and grow inside another amoeba even at reduced temperatures of 20 C.
