Many water and wastewater utilities are discovering the usefulness of a Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) in assisting with the planning, management, and administrative procedures required for the effective maintenance of their facilities. The first decision a utility must make is whether a CMMS is cost effective. Then it must choose the CMMS that best suits its needs. Since more than 300 CMMSs are available and more are on the drawing boards, selecting the "best" CMMS can be a challenging task. This paper describes how a project-specific CMMS system was selected for the Modesto Domestic Water Project in California's Central Valley and details the costs and benefits of CMMSs. As part of its design and construction services on the Modesto Domestic Water Project, Black & Veatch evaluated a wide range of CMMSs. This evaluation included extensive research, solicitation of proposals, and supplier demonstrations and interviews. Black & Veatch then recommended a system that is reliable, has a successful track record, is cost effective, and is relatively easy to use. A CMMS supplier was selected in July 1994.
