Earthquakes! Just in California, there have been five major earthquakes in the past five years: Loma Prieta, Joshua Tree, Cape Mendocino, Landers/Big Bear, and Northridge. One of the most damaging consequences is the loss of utilities. Many things have been done in the past to try to anticipate and alleviate the consequences of earthquake damage to water mains. These involve SCADA systems, rapid response plans, specific control valving, and special pipeline designs. One product that has proven itself as a pipeline protector in the past decade is the Flex-Tend flexible expansion joint. This product is designed to help with one of the most prevalent problems that plagues pipeline operators in earthquake areas--breakage due to differential movement. A location where differential movement is often a certainty is the transition between two structures or a structure and soil media or even within the soil. This includes connections to buildings, bridge crossings, tank connections, fault crossings. This report looks at the overall problem of differential movement and shows how damage and water loss have been and can be reduced or avoided with proper application of the product.
