Optical particulate analysis, generally known as particle counting in the water industry, can be a useful tool in assessing a treatment plant's effectiveness in removing cryptosporidium oocysts. In order to demonstrate the use of this technology in treatment assessment and optimization, this paper will focus on two questions: Can particle counting be used as a surrogate for pathogen removal in treatment plants?; and Does particle counting provide enough additional information about treatment to be useful for treatment optimization?
