With the recent microbial outbreaks, there is increasing concern in the drinking water industry regarding control of Giardia and Cryptosporidium. The proposed Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule will require increased removals (including physical and chemical disinfection) of these protozoans. Application of particle counting technology has been gaining popularity in the drinking water industry since particles in the size ranges of Giardia and Cryptosporidium may be used as surrogate for physical removals of these protozoans.
