A study was conducted to evaluate the use of enhanced coagulation with powdered activated carbon (EC/PAC) for the removal of DBP precursors from Colorado River water. The objective of the study was to determine the PAC and/or Ferric Chloride doses required to remove enough DBP precursors to allow for the use of free chlorine as a disinfectant in the distribution system, while maintaining the levels of trihalomethanes (THMs) and the sum of five haloacetic acids (HAA5) formed at or below their anticipated regulatory levels of 40 ug/L and 30 ug/L, respectively. A secondary objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of the EC/PAC process on the removal of arsenic.
