Groundwaters with different levels of natural organic matter (NOM) and disinfection byproduct precursors (DBPs) were treated using various technologies. The treatment technologies tested were: enhanced coagulation using ferric chloride followed by conventional treatment or microfiltration, ozone, ozone and biologically activated carbon (BAC), and nanofiltration. Evaluation of the various groundwaters and treatment technologies was primarily based on NOM and DBP precursor removal. In addition, color was also used to evaluate treatment performance. When investigating the development of groundwaters high in NOM and DBP precursors, the results from these tests can be applied to primarily screen treatment technologies.
